Over three evenings in late February a completely original and stunning new creation in light and sound, ‘Another Land’, is set to transform Dunfermline Abbey.

The new project, created especially for the Abbey and grounds, represents the end of a journey into the distant history of Fife. Originally scheduled to take place in December 2010, the production had to be postponed due to the atrocious weather conditions.

The production`s lead artist is Tim Fitzpatrick of Red Field Arts who was also responsible for ‘The Pilgrim’, a critically acclaimed work in light and sound, created for the same unique venue in 2008.

The new work is a continuation of the style that Red Field are aiming to establish and is about creating an original approach to the use of light and sound, woven around a very distinct kind of storytelling, in public spaces and buildings.

The Pilgrim amazed people with the use of 10,000 candles that carpeted the floor of the Abbey Nave and this time around the team behind ‘Another Land’ intend to produce a completely new landscape of light that will transform the abbey in a way that could never be imagined.

Tim Fitzpatrick is keen to attract people into the historic location of Dunfermline Abbey Nave

“Another Land has been in the planning for most of 2010 with the intention to build on many of the ideas behind The Pilgrim of 2008. The event is aiming to conjure a landscape where the distant past will seem to explode and shatter into an infinite number of pieces.

Creating public arts events which use sound, light and new media in original and dramatic forms enables audiences to experience key historic places in new and exciting ways and we are delighted to be able to stage this event in the Abbey Nave.”

The starting point for the event is in the gardens of Abbot House which will be open for refreshments and wine. Several of the artists of Contemporary Arts Dunfermline have been working alongside Red Field Arts and will be showing a new installation of work inspired by the project and the idea of Another land.

This work will act as the introduction at the entrance to the event before the visitors set off through the grounds of the Abbey to the Nave.

Supported by Historic Scotland and Celebrating Fife 2010, there will be five performances each night between the 25th and 27th February. Tickets are on sale at Abbot House, Visitdunfermline.com, Carnegie Hall Box Office and the Tourist Information Centre in Dunfermline priced £5.

[Note: this was due to run in Dec 2010 but due to the weather conditions it was postponed and is now on 25th - 27th Feb 2011]
