The new £50 million extension at Kingsgate Shopping Centre in Dunfermline was unveiled this weekend as eager shoppers looked forward to getting a first look at the new offering.
A range of new retailers, led by anchor store Debenhams, opened their doors at 10am on Friday (15th August) amid a fanfare of entertainment and music. Lucky competition winner, Claire Williams from Oakley, was first to get a glimpse of the new centre and marked the official opening by literally bursting through a specially designed screen which had been temporarily keeping the new extension under wraps. She was also rewarded the honour of being Kingsgate’s first big spender with £500 of Debenhams vouchers to spend as part of her prize.
Stephen Elliott, Director of Crosslands Properties Ltd, owners of Kingsgate Shopping Centre said, “The Kingsgate is already established as one of Fife’s leading shopping destinations and this extension will further enhance its offer and appeal among the people of Dunfermline and beyond. I am delighted to see our vision for the centre become a reality today by welcoming the new extension and development of the retail mix on offer at the Kingsgate.”
The new Kingsgate extension has created an additional 164,000 sq. ft of retail space across 28 units to refurbish and extend the centre to an overall size of 370,000 sq ft, almost doubling the centre’s existing floor space and making Kingsgate one of the largest regional shopping centres in Scotland.
New Look; JJB Sports; Waterstone’s; Little World; and Poundland are among the shops joining the line-up today and further units which include, The Body Shop; Starbucks; and Hawkin’s Bazaar are currently being fitted out. More new openings are also expected to roll out over the coming weeks and months, including Adam’s Kids and Dorothy Perkins and Burton, which are both set to relocate from the existing centre to substantially larger units.
The new openings will further strengthen the current retail offering at the existing shopping centre, which already features an impressive array of 50 top high street retailers and some of the UK’s most recognised brands, including: Marks & Spencer; Monsoon; Topshop; Game; Superdrug; Argos and JD Sports.
Neil Mackie, Centre Manager at Kingsgate said, “It is an exciting time ahead for Kingsgate and we look forward to welcoming many further new retailers to the centre in the near future. An extended Kingsgate is hugely significant for Dunfermline, both as a major boost to new job creation, as well as enhancing the retail offering already in the city for the people of Dunfermline, and the rest of Fife.”
Opening celebrations are set to continue throughout the weekend with an array of mall based entertainment and children’s activities taking place, including stilt walkers; face painters; balloon modellers and special appearances from Kingsgate mascot, Dumfy the Dragon, who will be handing out free tasty goodies. Performances by jazz band, Le Swing, and a Brazilian samba band will also have shoppers dancing through the aisles.
As well as improving the quality of retail in the town, the extension is also supported by a new multi-storey car park with over 700 spaces, which will bring the infrastructure development of the area full circle. The new extension is situated on the east side of the existing centre previously occupied by the bus station and multi-storey car park and will complement the recent opening of the new bus station at Queen Anne Street, making Dunfermline more accessible for visitors from the wider Fife region and beyond.
